The job of Director - Health Services is done for the purpose/s of overseeing the health services program for all schools within the framework of established policies and legal requirements of Yuma School District One; ensuring district health care practices comply with the laws relating to student health issues; serving as a health care resource to teachers, staff, and administrators; and serving as a staff nurse as dictated by program needs.
This job reports to Executive Director of Human ResourcesEssential Functions
- Oversees the health services program for the district; supervises each of the cluster registered nurses in conjunction with the school principal. Works with the cluster registered nurses to provide leadership and maintain the operation of the health services department; responsible to manage all the administrative aspects of the health services department.
- Conducts in-service education and new employee orientation through staff meetings and individual conferences for the purpose of maintaining skills and teaching new procedures.
- Coordinates student health services program components (e.g. medical waste removal from sites, maintenance and calibration of all medical equipment, crisis planning, budget requests, supplies, nursing staff meetings, etc.) for the purpose of delivering services within established timeframes and in compliance with related requirements for a comprehensive school health program.
- Conducts site visits for the purpose of providing consultation to school nurses and school administrators regarding complex health situations.
- Represents health services staff on the district level for the purpose of serving as a spokesperson for the district; works with the district emergency response team regarding emergency response procedures and preparedness.
- Collaborates with parents, students, health care providers, multi-disciplinary evaluation, and IEP team members, and/or public agencies for the purpose of promoting and/or securing student health services; providing information and complying with legal requirements.
- Performs personnel functions (e.g. recruiting, interviewing, hiring, supervising, evaluating, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing; enhancing productivity and ensuring standards are achieved and performance maximized.
- Administers district health program that includes first aid, medication, mandated screenings and specialized medical treatments as dictated by program needs (e.g. oral suctioning, catheterization, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children.
- Assesses situations involving students' safety, abuse (physical, sexual, drug, etc.) and other health related issues for the purpose of identifying problems, referring for proper treatment and complying with legal requirements.
- Assists with developing and implementing health care plans for students with health problems (e.g. IEPs, IHPs, Least Restrictive Environment, medications, prioritized interventions, etc.) for the purpose of meeting the needs of students with chronic health problems and/or accommodation requirements.
- Collaborates with parents, students, health care providers, and/or state/county/local agencies for the purpose of promoting and/or securing student health services; providing information and
implementing and/or maintaining services and programs.
- Compiles data from a wide variety of sources (e.g. staff, public agencies, accident reports, worker's compensation cases, etc.) for the purpose of analyzing issues, ensuring compliance with organization policies and procedures, monitoring and evaluating program component,s and meeting reporting requirements.
- Maintains a variety of manual and electronic files and/or records for the purpose of providing up-to-date reference and complying with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.
- Works with registered nures to assist students referred for illness and/or injury and with chronic illnesses and/or communicable diseases for the purpose of attending to their immediate health care concerns, initiating follow-up care and assisting the child in achieving the highest possible functional level.
- Prepares a variety of program-mandated reports for the purpose of documenting activities and issues, meeting compliance requirements, providing audit references, making presentations, and/or providing supporting materials for requested actions.
- Provides training on a variety of health related subjects for the purpose of promoting a healthy lifestyle and/or acting as a resource to students, teachers, health services staff other school personnel.
- Reports health and safety issues to assigned administrator and appropriate agencies for the purpose of maintaining students personal safety, a positive learning environment and complying with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.
- Responds to issues involving staff, conflicts in policies and regulations, community concerns, parental requests that may result in some negative impact and/or liability if not appropriately addressed for the purpose of identifying the relevant issues and recommending or implementing a plan of action that will efficiently resolve the issue.
- Serves as a resource to nurses, teachers, staff, and administrators for the purpose of conveying information, providing support and guidance, and assisting the development and evaluation of health services.
- Responsible to maintain and evaluate the health services department to ensure compliance with state, federal and district regulations and policies; researches and stays current with health and safety issues for the purpose of providing information to staff, students, parents and the public.
- Supervises health services staff in conjunction with the principal for the purpose of ensuring individual and site performance objectives are met.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: health standards and hazards; cultural differences of student population; job-related codes/laws/rules/regulations/policies; school safety and security practices; stages of child development; treatment modalities.

Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking, and 10% standing. The job is performed under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
Experience Job related experience is required. School health experience preferred.
Education Bachelors degree in job-related area.
